Street Department

Our street Department staff maintains over 130 miles of rights-of-way throughout the city limits.  This division is responsible for very visible programs such as pavement maintenance, guardrail installation and repair, sidewalk installation and repair, street cleaning, litter removal, mowing and trimming vegetation on public right of ways, and demolition of condemned properties.

Other services provided through this department are drainage issues, snow and ice removal, flooding situations, pothole patching, barricade placement to direct traffic in hazardous situations.  We also maintain any maintenance issues for all city department buildings, electrical and plumbing.

Sanitation Department

The City’s Sanitation Department is comprised of nine men.  There are six men responsible for the collection of residential waste Monday through Thursday.  They average pickup 7,000 homes weekly.  We run two trucks with three men each.  Rules for residential collection are posted on this site.  Residential pickup is once per week per household.  (Call for route information @ 684-2644)

Sanitation Officer:  This employee is responsible for enforcing the rules and regulations of the Sanitation Dept. as well as violations to these rules

Hazardous Waste

The City cannot accept any items such as shingles; Oil based paint, driveway sealer or any other items that are designated hazardous on the label. These items must be disposed of at a local landfill. There are 2 locations within our area that accept hazardous materials such as these:

Transfer Station: 

Two men operate the transfer station.  It is located at the end of Blue Ribbon Parkway (see map).  We have two semi trucks and four self-contained trailers for refuse hauling to the BFI landfill in Murfreesboro, TN.

Closed 12:00-12:30 Lunch 

We take residential and commercial refuse at this location. There is no fee for residential use but commercial is charged a disposal fee of $8.50 per cubic yard.  We also accept metal disposal with no fee at this location. 
The tipping fee for commercial trash haulers is $17 per cubic yard.  No fence wire is accepted.

The City’s Transfer station now accepts unused water based latex paint to be disposed of.
  This is a joint venture with the Bedford County Highway Department & the City’s Sanitation Department for the recycling of unused paint.  This is a free service to both City & county residence for paint disposal only.


Sign Department:

The Sign Department is responsible for all signs within the city limits.  This department is equipped with two men at all times.  We have the ability to make any sign within the city limits.  98% of all signs are made in house through this department.  This department is fully trained to do their job for the safety and well being of all motorists coming through the city limits of Shelbyville.  If you know of any sign that is down or gone, please feel free to call the Public Works office @ 684-2644 and the Sign Department will be glad to check on any and all calls.
